Spotlight: Karan Yamada, Hospitality and Events Co-ordinator
2nd May 2023
How did you get your job at d3t?
My path to d3t was perhaps not the most traditional one. I studied Japanese at the University of Manchester before settling on a career in Japan travel (surprise surprise!) for a few years.
However, I had heard great things from my partner who also works at d3t. So as soon as a position opened within the Operations team, I took a chance and applied for it. After meeting with the Operations Manager, I had a great feeling that I’d enjoy working here as part of her team and here I am now!
I started out as the general Admin Assistant helping with all aspects of the Operations team, but the role I’ve progressed into has a strong focus on culture and events within the studio.
What do you do day-to-day?
As the Hospitality and Events Co-ordinator, I certainly never have a dull day! On any given day I can be doing anything from buying more paper for the printer to deciding what kinds of cocktails will be served at our festive party.
My main responsibilities however, lie in making sure that we create events and activities which everyone can get involved with and have a fun time attending. Event management comes with various challenges and isn’t as simple as getting your mates together for your birthday BBQ. Planning a large scale event can start as early as a year in advance when I get my budget. From that point I then start investigating venues, reaching out to vendors who can cater or provide entertainment, tracking projected spend against budgets, and so much more! Seeing everyone’s (hopefully) smiling faces on the day of the event makes the whole process worthwhile.
I am also in charge of ensuring that the studio is fully stocked with tasty treats and any other supplies that the team needs to work. If we have any visitors on site, I also act as front of house – arranging catering, booking meeting rooms, and much more!
As someone very aptly put, “Karan gets stuff done.” In essence, I am always available in the studio for anyone who needs a helping hand.
Do you have any tips for people looking to get into the games industry?
Hearing from those who have applied to get into the games industry, I think those who have stood out have displayed a real passion for their craft. Whether that be programming, design or art. Each team member really cares about the work they do, and I think if you can show that in your application, you’ll have a good chance of getting in.
