Nikki Rose

Tell us a bit of information about your experience/career background?

I’ve been a professional Concept Artist for about one and a half years now. I’ve worked on various freelance projects and had my first full-time position as a Junior at Maze Theory last year. During my time there I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom which was very well received!

Just before joining d3t, I did some contract work back at the university I graduated from (Norwich University of The Arts) as a Visiting Lecturer. This involved me being able to talk to second year game students about my journey so far and to help guide them through their projects, which for me was extremely rewarding. I also got to opportunity to work on a couple of really exciting indie titles during this time that I can’t wait to talk more about in the future.

Why d3t?

One thing I look for in a studio is care and compassion for their employees. I got a really good sense of this during my interview when they were telling me about life at d3t. Meeting the wider team, they seem really happy here which only made me want the position more!

The prospect of co-development interested me too, I love the idea of being able to work on a variety of projects that could be very different from one another – a great opportunity to grow in your specialism learning the needs of different clients.

What do you love about games?

I grew up in a house with four brothers (with me being the youngest) that all played video games, and eventually I got the bug too. It’s a nostalgic hobby for me that eventually made its way to being my career. I have fond memories of playing Crash Bandicoot as a child and as I grew up, my taste expanded into narrative driven games. I love being immersed into a world full of lore and interesting characters. I can get pretty invested.

What games are you currently playing, and what is your favourite game?

I’m currently making my way through the Resident Evil 4 Remake, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe, all whilst trying to platinum God of War: Ragnarok. Crab Champions is also great fun with friends (it’s literally crabs with weapons). I actually have too many games to finish at this rate and not enough time! My favourite game however from my childhood would have to be Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. I played it tirelessly as a child and I have very fond memories of playing it with my brother. I even have a copy of it in my display cabinet.

My favourite game from this generation is 100% God of War: Ragnarok. There is nothing I can fault about it really, for me it is a must play for any PS5 owner. An incredible game with an incredible story, beautiful environments, and unforgettable characters.

Do you have any fun facts or hobbies?

I have a massive soft spot for simulation games. I go through phases of playing The Sims, Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. I find them super relaxing, and I weirdly enjoy the grind of a farming sim, or just the freedom of design and play in The Sims. I am also a glutton for horror games. Ever since I played Alien: Isolation in 2015, I’ve somehow managed to build up mass resilience to all things scary. It’s like wearing a suit of armour!

My favourite animals also are penguins, dogs, seals, and bunnies!
